Born in Long Piece, Lowman’s Wd.,
St. Vincent on May 18, 1970, James ‘Jamesy P’
Morgan officially began his musical career in 1993 by
singing on stage at Tortola’s annual Festival
in the British Virgin Islands.
Before then he would hone his skills, singing at clubs
and “in front of anyone willing to listen,”
especially in the barbershop where he worked. His music
wasn’t always welcomed though, annoying his girlfriend
most of the time.
In Jamaica he recorded ‘The Shocker’
and ‘Living It Up’ on the ‘Up A Notch’
album, songs that “turned over the Virgin Islands
and St. Vincent.” Both were recorded by Rohan
Dwyer, famous for Junior Kelly’s ‘Love So
Nice’ album.
Following that, ‘Giving Thanks,’ also on
the ‘Up A Notch album was released in 2002 and
that’s when Jamesy P became a household name regionally.
Jamesy P lists his musical inspiration
in the early days as Daddy Juicy and Pinch P.
The transition from dancehall to Soca
came after Luta, a St. Vincent artist famous for ‘Busy
Tone’ told him to forget dancehall and concentrate
on Soca, an industry that was easier to break into.
After that Jamesy P went on to St. Vincent and recorded
Nookie, produced by Mark Cyrus of the Masterroom Studios.
The single ‘Nookie’ blew up the airwaves
and started a whole Nookie revolution.
The song, liked for its provocative lyrics and pulsating
beat has been turning heads and ears in every age group
from New York to Miami, in Toronto and the entire Caribbean.
It is ‘Nookie’ that launched Jamesy P’s
career internationally and he has already travelled
to the United States, Great Britain, Canada and most
Caribbean islands promoting the song.
Jamesy P's ‘Nookie’ was a huge success in
Trinidads 2005 carnival, peaking at number one for weeks,
dating back to September 5, 2004.
“Nookie was Carnival,” Jamesy P said.
